Mercedes have had some pretty awful PR recently in the UK. For the third time in only four months one of their bendy buses has caught fire.
Who would have thought that the iconic double decker would ever be replaced in London? But they were. By – of all things – a bus from Germany. In fact London Transport has bought 120 of them, much to the delight of customers and motorists who immediately saw the benefits over the traditional tourist tin cans. Soon the English capital was blitzed by Mercedes and Londoners greeted it with smiles round every bend.
But then this: London’s burning – nasty news for Mercedes.
So if you were at Mercedes, what PR or crisis management would you roll out to smooth over what is clearly no longer just a one-off? Or would you try to keep schtumm? I’ve noticed it’s been pretty quiet in Germany… nobody interested in reporting it here? Or is Mercedes too embarassed to talk about it?
