This is certainly the ultimate endorsement. The only comparable thing I can think of is Cunard, owners of the Queen Mary II cruise liner, using quotes from Desmond Tutu to say what a great trip it is.

Nice material! It's funny - I'd claim to be almost totally relaxed about word-bandying, I might insist that you could throw any word at me without my taking offence, but like you I would decline to use the N-word where you backed off. Fact is, we've all been exposed to too much proscriptive complaining to hang on to our old habits.

I find really interesting that the ad lost you in the first two lines yet, you finished reading it, saved it, showed it in a number of MBA courses and wrote a blog post about it. The ad stop running 6 years ago and you've kept it alive. If you ask me. Job done.

The bizarre thing however is that just over a year ago apparently they were perfectly fine with the Jersey Shore crew sporting their stuff. In fact, last summer A&F actually began selling "The Fitchuation" T-shirts, in a nod to Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino!

You're absolutely right in my opinion. But as a German and a beer drinker I can not say that the Malteser slogan is that stupid. When I read it first I never thought about a word called "teser". But maybe this comes from that I already know the brand and that I see it as a brand name when looking at it. I think its not the best wordplay in marketing history but also not the worst.

Something similar done in the UK back in the early '90s... see the last advert "Reg on industrial action" where the brand isn't shown: http://www.behance.net/Gallery/Regal-Cigarettes/203507

Off the top of my head I am not sure that you can really pinpoint whether advertising is shaping society or if it is reflecting society .

Maybe it is as with many things in business: it depends... it depends on the society in question, their media receptiveness, their general adherence to conservative, traditional values etc.

In reality however it is probably a bit of both. Advertising is usually (or should be) well ahead of time to identify trends. They then, if they get it right, make products that will ride this trend. Thus they are not the originators of the change/shaping but merely enforce its magnitude and quicken its development.
So they are not the originators but without them the trend would have not had such an effect on society as it had, making them multiplicators and mirrors at the same time.

I think in a few years thes mugs will be the real collectibles. And the company will sell them only slowly, from time to time one piece and everytime veeeryy expensive. (I'd love to have one.)
