Fake fires for modern cave men

If you’ve never seen this product before, allow me to introduce you to the flatscreen open fire. Slap it on the wall, switch it on and you immediately have all the pre-historic atmosphere of a cave fire in the comfort of a 21st century home.

Only it’s not real…

Who buys these things? Hotels? Trendy bars? Obviously neither. Judging by their media choice the sellers of these products are going for the domestic buyer. I found this one pictured in a German mag, carefully placed on cavewoman’s favourite page in the middle of the crossword puzzle.

It certainly puzzles me. Surely if people have got that much money, they’d prefer the real thing…

Or am I missing the point?

Will it work? Do tell me if you know anyone who’s bought one…

  1. It’s a fact that people can generate for themselves a sense of being hot or cold. Stage hypnotists do this all the time. It’s an observation of my own, that the minute people spot a source of heat and get within a few feet of it, they say they feel warmer. It’s all in the mind. You can bet the company did their homework on this. Remember, that ducted air, heat exchangers, radiators, don’t necessarily help people to feel warm if they’re chilled. Stick a candle in front of them and they’ll huddle round it, hands out. Bingo! I think this will be a winner. Besides, as you point out, it’s the caveman instinct. If you’re cold, find something that you know gives out warmth. Instinct, maybe. Good one.
