Turkish consumers

While more and more people in west European countries complain about the rising number of immigrants, some marketing departments are recognising the demographic shifts and responding to the opportunity.

In the States this started happening a long time ago. The Mexican population alone numbers more than 15m – that would be a whole country in Europe, it’s the size of the Netherlands. And through Mexican trends in the States we now all embrace tacos and nachos in the same way Germans embraced Italian food with salivating tastebuds in the 70s.

Now the long-standing relationship between Germany and Turkey (which goes back to the Ottoman empire and helped fuel the Wirtschaftswunder through “Guest Workers” from Turkey; they stayed and settled here), has resulted in the Germans eating more kebabs per year than Hamburgers (whose very name is German!), or even curry wurst.

Curry wurst? Isn’t that a mixture too? Indian spice meets German tradition. Like in England, where some supermarkets sell curry pizza.

Telekom and Turks

Anyway, go to Telekom outlets in Germany, or some banks, and you find leaflets in Turkish, promoting ring tones and screensavers in Turkish, or special rate banking for transfering funds home to the folk.

Multiculti is here to stay.
